Streamlining Health Logistics Nationwide
The Medical Supplies Division (MSD) of the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka, partnered with EWIS to implement a cutting-edge Drug Distribution and Supply Chain Management System that transformed the nation’s approach to procuring, managing, and delivering medical supplies. The solution enabled real-time coordination across 2,500+ hospitals, 26 regional supply stores, and 4 central warehouses, strengthening Sri Lanka’s medical logistics and public health infrastructure.
About our customer
The Medical Supplies Division (MSD) is the central authority responsible for planning, procurement, quality assurance, and distribution of medicines and medical supplies for Sri Lanka’s public healthcare system. It plays a critical role in ensuring uninterrupted availability of essential drugs across the country.
Challenges addressed
Previously managed through manual processes, the MSD faced several systemic issues:
No real-time visibility of stock levels across hospitals
Delays in order tracking and inventory replenishment
Limited coordination with key stakeholders like SPC and NDQAL
High risk of inefficiencies, stock-outs, and poor-quality product circulation
Lack of automation in forecasting, procurement, and financial disbursement
Transformation delivered
EWIS delivered a fully digitized, end-to-end medical supply chain platform integrated with:
∙Hospitals, regional stores, and central warehouses
∙State Pharmaceutical Corporation (SPC) for order updates
∙National Drug Quality Assurance Lab (NDQAL) for test results
∙Ministry of Health for real-time performance monitoring via dashboards
The platform automates forecasting, procurement, inventory, quality control, financial management, and last-mile distribution, ensuring the right supplies reach the right location at the right time. It supports USD 425 million worth of national medical procurement annually.
