Smart Immunization for a Healthier Tomorrow 

The Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka, partnered with EWIS to develop a landmark Immunization Information System—a digital solution to track and manage childhood immunizations from birth to age 14. By empowering midwives to capture data directly from the field, the system has strengthened Sri Lanka’s public health infrastructure with real time, accurate, and accessible immunization records. 

About our customer 

The Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health plays a central role in disease surveillance, immunization planning, and public health interventions across Sri Lanka. The unit is responsible for maintaining national vaccination programs and ensuring community health through timely, data-driven strategies. 

Challenges addressed 

The Ministry recognized the need to modernize its traditionally paper-based immunization tracking system. Key challenges included: 

• Manual record-keeping prone to errors and delays 

• Limited visibility into nationwide immunization progress 

• Lack of centralized data for stock, expiry, and adverse event tracking 

• Inability to update records in remote areas with limited internet access 

   

Transformation delivered 

EWIS developed a robust and field-ready Immunization Information System designed to digitize and streamline immunization workflows. Key features included: 

• End-to-End Child Immunization Tracking: Covers all immunization stages from birth  up to 14 years of age 

• Midwife-Level Data Entry: Midwives input child progress directly into the system from  the grassroots level 

• Offline Functionality: Data can be entered without connectivity and automatically synchronized when internet access is available 

• Stock & Expiry Management: Tracks vaccine inventory, batch numbers, and expiry dates at each location 

• Adverse Event Monitoring: Captures allergy records and any adverse reactions to vaccines for safety and reporting 

•  Real-Time Dashboards: Provides national and regional insights to support timely policy and intervention decisions 

Setting a new standard 

This digital solution has elevated Sri Lanka’s immunization program to new heights—enabling accurate monitoring, efficient vaccine management, and improved response to health events. By connecting field-level health workers to a centralized platform, the Ministry of Health now has the visibility and tools to ensure no child is left behind in the country’s vaccination drive.
