EWIS powers the digital transformation of Sri Lanka’s National Examinations
The Department of Examinations Sri Lanka is the central authority for administering all key public exams in the country, including the Grade 5 Scholarship, GCE O/L and A/L, Technical College exams, and several recruitment and foreign examinations. Under an ADB-funded initiative, EWIS delivered a turnkey digital transformation solution to modernize the department’s examination processes—marking a significant national milestone.
About our customer
The Department of Examinations is the government body responsible for planning, conducting, and managing all major public and institutional examinations across Sri Lanka.
Challenges addressed
Outdated, manual systems were limiting efficiency, transparency, and scalability in administering high-stakes exams. The department needed to automate end-to-end operations—from organizing and conducting exams to processing results and managing re-scrutiny.
Transformation delivered
At the heart of this transformation is the Examination Information System—a comprehensive digital platform that streamlined the entire examination lifecycle. For the first time in Sri Lanka, Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) technology was introduced to automate the marking and totaling process. The system also enabled real-time result publishing, digital archiving, and data-driven research capabilities.EWIS’s solution empowered the department to operate with greater accuracy, speed, and public trust in a digital-first era.
