Implement a pioneering marine tracking and compliance solution
Published on July 1, 2025
EWIS developed a rugged marine tracking system enabling real-time catch logging and GPS tracking, ensuring Sri Lanka’s EU seafood export compliance.
Safeguarding Our Seas
The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources partnered with EWIS to implement a pioneering marine tracking and compliance solution that enabled multi-day fishing crafts to digitally log and transmit their catch data along with real-time GPS coordinates. This innovative solution helped Sri Lanka meet critical European Union (EU) export compliance requirements, securing the country's ability to export seafood to international markets.
About our customer
The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources is the national body responsible for managing and regulating Sri Lanka’s fisheries sector. It plays a vital role in ensuring sustainable fishing practices, monitoring territorial waters, and maintaining compliance with international standards to support trade and maritime governance.
Challenges addressed
To continue seafood exports to the European Union, Sri Lanka needed to prove that multi-day fishing vessels were operating within the country’s territorial waters. The department required a rugged, reliable, and real-time tracking and reporting solution that could:
Operate in extreme offshore environments
Capture and transmit accurate GPS location of each catch
Allow fishermen to log catch details digitally
Work seamlessly with limited connectivity at sea
Centralize all data for regulatory review and traceability
Transformation delivered
EWIS developed and deployed a comprehensive sea-bound tracking solution powered by both software and hardware innovations. The key components included:
∙Rugged Mobile Application: Installed on a specialized tablet for recording catch data and automatically capturing GPS coordinates
∙Data Transmission System: Real-time syncing of location and catch data to the central operations center via 4G or transponder connectivity
∙Custom-Built Rugged Device – EWIS T800RG:
Designed in Sri Lanka, purpose-built for marine environments
Dust-resistant and waterproof (IP67-rated, submersible up to 1 meter for 30 minutes)
Equipped with in-built GPS and 4G connectivity for uninterrupted location tracking
Engineered to withstand harsh sea conditions, ideal for life on fishing vessels
Setting a new standard
This first-of-its-kind solution not only ensured compliance with EU fisheries export regulations but also marked the introduction of Sri Lanka’s first rugged smart device. By empowering fishermen with modern technology and providing the Department with real-time visibility, the project enhanced national maritime governance and reinforced Sri Lanka’s credibility in the global seafood export market.
